Rare Element Resources has stated it wants the Bear Lodge Mountains to be “the next North American source of rare earths.” The Bear Lodge Mountains were mined for gold during the late 1800s and early 1900s, and the US Bureau of Mines first “explored” for rare earth minerals in the early 1950s.

Exploration for both gold and rare earths was ongoing until January 2016, when the company announced it was suspending all activities on the project.

This project consisted of approximately 9000 acres and is located on “private” land as well as Black Hills National Forest land.
