Homestake mined more than forty million ounces, or over 1.2 million kg, of gold out of the northern Black Hills from 1876 through 2002. Barrick Gold merged with Homestake in 2001 and still manages old tailings and waste.

The former open pit mine is now the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), where scientists conduct dark matter and neutrino physics research. SURF’s latest plan is to backfill one of the huge holes that Homestake left underground.
